HOME BIRTH STORY: From A Disconnected Hospital Birth to an Awesome Home Birth with Cayla Thomas

October 24, 2017

In today’s episode we’re sharing Cayla’s birth story of her son Jude, born at home and 2 months old at the time we speak.

Cayla is connected with another DIAH mama, Tammy Williams from episode 35 (Tammy introduced Cayla to the podcast - we love hearing about how listeners find us!).

For her first pregnancy with her daughter Adawnna, Cayla was scared of home birth and decided instead for the natural route in a hospital. She shared with us:

“I was able to do it all natural (voicing my desires every step of the way) but after birth they took her away immediately for some fluid in her lungs (which looking back was an over-reaction/intervention). This disconnect I had right away with her left me feeling empty & led to many feelings of baby blues & some PPD in the following weeks.”

When she became pregnant a second time, she and her husband Corey knew they wanted something different and were ready to “do it at home!”

Friend Tammy helped refer a midwife practice. Cayla experienced a world of difference the second time around in terms of prenatal care, birth and postnatal. She shared how helpful it was to ask the what-ifs and have in-depth conversations with her care providers. They were then better able to address them and work through any residual fear.

Cayla recognized that although there might be some fear, when labor kicks in, you surrender, trust in your body and create space for the body to do what it’s meant to do. And thus, baby Jude was born!

“My daughter was in living room with my mom and brother, and came in to meet him immediately after. I am still in awe of the whole experience and have not felt any baby blues or PPD feelings thus far and I feel a large part of that has to do with the connection I've been able to make with Jude right away and the peace of the whole birth experience and awesome postnatal care!!”

Written birth story from Carla

I wanted to do a home birth with my first but decided against it because I was scared. I went the route of seeing an OB & delivered at Winnie Palmer. However, I knew I definitely wanted it to be all natural & I wanted skin-to-skin & nursing right after she was born. I was able to do it all natural (voicing my desires every step of the way) but after birth they took her away immediately for some fluid in her lungs (which looking back was an over-reaction/intervention). This disconnect I had right away with her left me feeling empty & led to many feelings of baby blues & some PPD in the following weeks.

When I got pregnant a second time there was no question I would do it at home :) !! I still had some fears but worked through them throughout (& honestly feared the hospital more!). The whole experience from the prenatal care to delivery & postnatal care has been a world of difference! My labor and delivery was only 4.5 hours (compared to 21 with my daughter). There was no time to set up pool for water birth. Midwife assistant got here first & by the time midwife got here I was 10 cm & she could feel his head right there! My daughter was in living room with my mom & brother & came in to meet him immediately after. I am still in awe of the whole experience & have not felt any baby blues or PPD feelings thus far & I feel a large part of that has to do with the connection I've been able to make with Jude right away & the peace of the whole birth experience & awesome postnatal care!!
